We raked leaves, planted bulbs, cleaned moss off the roof, emptied the gutters and put on storm windows, and now we’re
ready for, and looking forward to, winter.
One sunny day, we drove to Ossining, NY to see the new Maryknoll Mission Room. It is pretty incredible – there are lots
of attention-getting devices to deliver their mission around the world messages.
Afterwards, we found our way back to Connecticut on some colorful back roads through Katonah, Bedford and Pound
Ridge – this is really beautiful country.During the month we were busy with emails, letters and phone calls raising money for two very special projects of our own: nursing school fees for Tanzin Dolkar from Kibber, India and an educational program for 11 Masai girls in Bissel, Kenya. Please contact Marilyn at parkerma@juno.com if you would like to help. A very special thanks to all of you who have already contributed to these projects.
We spent a weekend in Boston, where we attended the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Fall Congress.
It was nice renewing old friendships and finding out about some exciting new programs that are being initiated. As
always the Honors Assembly and Dinner were the highpoint of the meeting. At the Members' and Students' Luncheon Jennifer
received the "Outstanding Young Engineer" award from ASME President Tom Barlow. We met her
at a meeting in Texas eight years ago and John has mentored her since then. Early Sunday morning we attended mass in the chapel in the mall – a first for us! The chapel is
located near the Boston Convention Center and between two large hotels and is a welcoming place for those busy with
meetings who would otherwise find it difficult to "keep the Lord's Day holy".
On Thanksgiving Day, we gathered with family at John’s brother’s home in Berlin
(Connecticut not Germany), for a festive dinner of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, lots of
sweet potatoes, green beans, asparagus, creamed onions, pumpkin pie and mincemeat tarts. Two of Marilyn’s Samburu photos, taken last August, are in the Holiday Show at Rowayton Arts Center. If you purchase one (or both), as a gift for a friend, you will be gifting a Masai girl in Kenya as well. Please contact Marilyn at parkerma@juno.com if you’d like to purchase them. Thank you to all the prayer partners who put together Christmas cards and letters for the children in Tumaini that they are praying for (every day, we hope). The package is on its way to Kenya with our friend Jane. Dearest Lord, Teach us to be generous, Teach us to serve You as You deserve To give and not to count the costs To fight and not to heed the wounds To toil and not to seek for rest To labor and not to ask for any rewards except that of knowing that we are doing Your will. Amen. ~from St. Ignatius of Loyola/Maryknoll~ |
