This month was our time for adventurous safaris (journeys) to some places in Kenya that we hadn’t been to during our previous six visits.
We endured over 100 kilometers of washboard road to get to Marsabit – and then wondered what its’ redeeming value could possibly be. We learned
that there are more Catholics than Muslims there – which wasn’t at all obvious from what we‘d seen on the main street. But we were told that all the
shop owners are Somali and that they only sell clothes for Muslims, so at Sunday masses there are often some men wearing white caps. (Click on images

On our first morning game drive in Buffalo Springs Reserve, we saw four of the Big Five (elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard - there are no rhinos
in Buffalo Springs) before breakfast, and then the next morning, we saw six cats. We’d only ever seen one leopard before, and that was during our
very first safari in the Serengeti in 2002 – and now here in Buffalo Springs, we sighted one five times. And we know there were at least two there
because we saw them both at the same time in the same tree.
We attended the Ground Breaking Ceremony at Ripples International Headquarters for the new New Start Baby Centre, the Kindergarten and the Tumaini
Girls’ Centre. All the speeches emphasized “The Rights of the Child”, as set forth by the UN Convention. For more about the work of Ripples Int’l,
see www.ripplesintl.or.ke.
In Western Kenya, we enjoyed our stay at Rondo Centre in Kakamega Forest – and a day with the 124 children at Nambale Magnet School as they worked in
their classrooms, had lunch in the dining hall and played games on the sports field. Rev. Evalyn Wakhusama, the founder of NMS, will receive a
Distinguished Alumni Award in October from Yale University. For more about NMS, see
www.nambalemagnet.org .Thank you, Lord, that Your grace helps us to realize that rebellion against weakness, sins and mistakes is the pride of those who think themselves perfect and forget that we are weakness. If only our pride understood that You perform miracles to sustain true and genuine humility. The important thing is to begin again, humbly and courageously, after every fall. When the not truly humble fall, they are crushed. “How could I possibly have failed? I cannot accept it!” The truly humble laugh at themselves without any bitterness. No surprise. No astonishment. The important thing is not to waste any time getting up and beginning anew. At the great judgment the Lord may say to someone: “How horrible! You fell a million times!” But all is savaged if that person can say: “Yes, Lord, it really is frightful! But Your grace helped me to get back on my feet quickly, a million and one times!” ~Maryknoll |
