A time of renewal – I (Marilyn) attended the NPC retreat one weekend (see www.norotonchurch.org) - with 110 women from Darien, Rowayton and other places. Peg Cantwell, whom we had met in California last March, was the guest speaker – and she was fabulous! She reminded me of John’s mom (Irene) – small but feisty. With her powerful voice and down-to-earth messages, she challenged us to “Soar like Eagles” (Isaiah 40:31) – to discover who we are, and what our impact on the world is, and then to live a radical lifestyle. Our friend, Evalyn, came from Nairobi for our retreat, and then afterwards, she stayed with us for a few days. It was great to catch up on what’s happening in Kenya – and we especially enjoyed getting together one day with two friends who were in Kenya last August, and who had taught twenty-three children in Kaluni how to tell their stories with pictures they took with digital cameras. These children’s photographs are on exhibit in Westport until mid-February (see www.tellingourstorieskenya.org) One evening, twenty-eight friends (including two Kenyan women who live and work in CT and three children) gathered for a pot-luck supper with Evalyn. Thank you so much everyone, for all the wonderful food you brought. And thank you too Evalyn, for bringing us all up to date on the progress that’s been made on Nambale Residential School which you are building for children in Western Kenya (see www.wiks.org) So Kenya and all our Kenyan friends (both here and there) have been very much on our minds - and in our hearts and prayers. We also enjoyed a “Down Memories Lane” dinner with five “Gourmand” friends from Norwalk and New Canaan. We all contributed to the meal with food we had enjoyed as children – and then we showed photographs of ourselves taken many, many years ago. John and Sherrie are the only remaining, original members of this group, which was formed 29 years ago. |
